Florence MAPLab

The Florence MAPLab (Multisensory, Action & Perception Laboratory) at the University of Florence, within the Department of Neuroscience, Psychology, Pharmacology and Child Health (NEUROFARBA), investigates how perception, action, and multisensory processing are connected in the brain, in both humans and animal models.

Our research explores the mechanisms that allow us to interpret the multisensory world. We study how sensory and motor systems interact, shaping perception, cognition, guiding decision-making, and supporting actions.

By combining experimental psychology, psychophysics, neurophysiology (including EEG, fMRI, fNIRS, pupillometry, two-photon imaging, and patch-clamp electrophysiology), eye-tracking and computational modeling, , the laboratory aims to uncover the sensory, neural, and cognitive principles that support perception, action, and adaptive behavior across multiple levels of analysis.

Our mission is to advance scientific knowledge while fostering innovation, collaboration, and the training of the next generation of researchers in the field of perception and action.

The lab brings together complementary expertise to address a wide range of topics, including:

  • Multisensory integration and perceptual dynamics
  • Numerical cognition and action–perception links
  • Developmental and educational aspects of perception
  • Neurophysiology of vision and computational approaches
  • Visual perception, complexity, and efficiency of coding strategies
  • Neuro-aesthetics and the perceptual basis of aesthetic experience
  • Artificial intelligence and machine learning applications in neuroscience
  • Critical period plasticity and maladaptive plasticity mechanisms
  • Visual system development and sensory-motor integration
  • Advanced optical and electrophysiological methods to study neural activity in animal models
